Heat Pump Wiring · The electric side, on the permit
Your HVAC contractor sets the heat pump. John wires it.
A heat pump is two trades. The HVAC contractor installs the equipment, and the electrical work needs a licensed electrician listed on the permit. John is that electrician: he pulls the electrical permit, runs the circuit and the disconnect, wires the units and stands for the inspection.
Check the panel before the equipment arrives
A heat pump is a large, steady load, and in many houses it arrives alongside an electric range, an induction cooktop or an EV charger. The panel and the service have to carry all of it. If they cannot, the service upgrade comes first, and that is the work John does most.
What the heat pump job covers:
A look at the panel and service before the install
A dedicated circuit for the outdoor unit
A disconnect at the outdoor unit
Wiring to the indoor air handlers
The electrical permit, with John as the licensed electrician
The inspection
Induction cooktop circuits at the same time, if the kitchen is going electric too

- Does a heat pump install need an electrician?
- Yes. The HVAC contractor installs the heat pump, but the electrical work needs a licensed electrician on the permit. John pulls that permit, wires the units and stands for the inspection.
- Do you install the heat pump itself?
- No. An HVAC contractor installs the heat pump. John does the electrical side: the circuit, the disconnect, the wiring and the electrical permit.
- Will my panel handle a heat pump?
- Often, but not always. John checks the panel and the service first. If they cannot carry the new load, a service upgrade comes first.
